He is one of the most well known. Carnatic vocalists in the twentieth century. He started out very young and achieved fame with his voice and became the youngest recipient of the Sangeet Kalanidhi Award by the Music Academy. He is better known as `Semmangudi Maama' or uncle by all his disciples. He was so erudite in his task that he has been called the Titamaha' or the grandfather of Modern Carnatic Music. He could sing several ranges of krithis, ragas and could improvise on the stage to delight his audience. He has received several major awards like the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan from the Government of India. He has also been given the ‘Kalidas Samman' by the Government of Madhya Pradesh.
